Iris Technology's Revolutionary Merlin-3 Changes the Game

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) March 9, 2011

Iris Technology Corporation, an Irvine, CA-based defense contractor, has been awarded a 5-year, $13.5 million contract by the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide The United States Marine Corps (USMC) with the Iris Merlin-3™ radio power adapter. The Merlin-3's primary function is to serve as an alternative power source for the Harris Falcon III® AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radio.*

"When Harris introduced the 117G, Iris Technology recognized it as a game-changing technology. We wanted to introduce something that would be as equally game-changing, and we succeeded," said Edward O'Rourke, Iris Technology CEO. "Nothing out there is as versatile, powerful and efficient as the Merlin-3™."

Unlike other adapters, which are designed to completely replace the existing radio battery, the Merlin-3™ fits between the radio and the existing battery box and uses a standard, full size, rechargeable BB-2590/U or BB-390B battery. Because it uses existing parts, the Merlin-3 reduces system cost and weight.

When a battery or other power source is attached, the Merlin-3 serves as an uninterruptible mobile power supply (UPS). It exports up to 100 W to directly power a wide variety of accessories including laptops, auxiliary speakers, and small personal electronics. Connections are made using Iris-provided "smart" cables, so the system is self-configuring.

The Merlin-3™ has a 97% efficiency rating and receives input from a host of AC and DC power sources. Solar circuitry is built into the device, which easily connects to portable solar panels and is Solar Power Alternative Communications Energy System (SPACES) interoperable.
